Kurt Bauman’s Mission…
In the summer of 2002 Kurt Bauman had the shock of a lifetime. At the age of 35, he learned that he had Type 1 Diabetes and would face an unrelenting battle to control his blood sugar for the rest of his life.
Kurt was never an avid athlete or runner. In a spontaneous effort to push back at his diagnosis, he entered his name in the lottery for the New York City marathon. Surprisingly enough, Kurt won a bib number and after 18 weeks of rigorous training ran with an insulin pump and food reserves, checking his glucose levels every 5 miles. The accomplishment he felt as he crossed the finish line was incredible. In that moment a mission was born. Now Kurt is committed to running 50 marathons in all 50 United States. So far, he has completed seventeen marathons in sixteen states, with five more planned before the end of 2010. Kurt will even run a marathon in Antarctica in 2011!
This quest will not be accomplished overnight, and as a diabetic, Kurt remembers everyday that it is a gift and privilege to have the ability to run for diabetes – and to represent diabetics everywhere who can’t. His passion for running has transformed his typical suburban life into a nationwide journey of hope to support the diabetes cause and inspire others.
Kurt’s mission is three-fold:
- To increase awareness of Diabetes, and reach out to the 6 million Americans who unknowingly suffer from this disease without treatment.
- To prevent Type 2 Diabetes and other chronic illnesses by encouraging people to be the cure through diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
- To empower people everywhere to push past their fears and strive to accomplish their goals.
